Specialty Contact Lenses in Los Angeles

When standard lenses can’t, custom lenses can.

Some eyes can’t be corrected off the shelf — keratoconus and corneal disease, severe dry eye, post-surgical corneas, Bell’s palsy and facial palsies. For those eyes we fit free-form scleral lenses exclusively — designed from an Eaglet Eye Surface Profiler map with hundreds of thousands of points across the sclera. Very few offices in California carry this technology, and patients fly in for it.

The designs

Every lens in the toolkit.

Scleral lenses

Large lenses that vault the cornea entirely on a cushion of saline. They are the workhorse for keratoconus, severe dry eye and exposure.

Rigid gas permeable (RGP)

Small rigid lenses whose tear layer rewrites the cornea’s optics, for crisp vision in experienced wearers.

Hybrid lenses

Rigid center, soft skirt: sharp optics with soft-lens comfort when an RGP won’t stay put.

Piggyback systems

A soft lens under a rigid lens, cushioning sensitive corneas that need rigid clarity.

Custom soft designs

Thicker, specially profiled soft lenses for mild irregularity, high astigmatism and early cones.

Ortho-K

Overnight shaping lenses for myopia control and lens-free days on appropriate corneas.

Post-surgical designs

Lenses engineered for corneas after cross-linking, ring segments, transplants or post-LASIK ectasia.

The fitting

Mapped, designed, refined.

  1. 01

    Map the eye

Eaglet Eye Surface Profiler mapping, corneal topography and anterior-segment imaging capture the true shape of your cornea and sclera.

  2. 02

    Design the lens

Free-form designs, including Visionary Optics Latitude, are built from your map, not adapted from a stock curve.

  3. 03

    Train and dispense

Insertion, removal and care, taught by our optometrists in Los Angeles until it’s routine. Saline, plungers and cleaning covered.

  4. 04

    Refine

Clearance, landing and optics checked and adjusted at follow-ups until comfort and clarity hold all day.

A specialty fitting may be the answer if

  • Glasses correct you on paper but vision still ghosts or doubles
  • Standard soft lenses are uncomfortable or unstable
  • You have keratoconus, ectasia, scarring or a transplant
  • Severe dry eye makes ordinary lenses unwearable
  • Your lids don’t close fully (Bell’s palsy, facial palsy)

Led by

All specialty lens evaluations and fittings are personally overseen by Dr. Brandon Cohenmehr, OD — published in scleral lens care and recognized with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.

Common questions

Specialty contact lenses, answered.

Anything else, call the office at 310-828-2010.

  • Scleral and hybrid designs rest on less sensitive tissue than the cornea, so many patients with irregular corneas find them more comfortable than standard lenses once trained.

  • Typically an evaluation, a dispense-and-training visit, and one or two refinements. Complex corneas can take more; we tell you honestly at the mapping stage.

  • We are in network with common vision plans including VSP and EyeMed, and plans often cover part or all of medically necessary lenses. We check your benefits before you commit.

  • All specialty lens evaluations and fittings are personally overseen by Dr. Brandon Cohenmehr, OD.

  • Yes — patients fly in from across California and beyond for free-form scleral lens fittings. We cluster mapping, fitting and training into travel-friendly visits.
