Glaucoma Testing & Management in Los Angeles

Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Retinal Disease

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve without symptoms, and the side vision it takes does not come back. Dr. Kevin Cohenmehr checks for it at every comprehensive exam (eye pressure and the optic nerve, with OCT and visual fields when indicated) and monitors glaucoma suspects so treatment starts before vision is lost. The same visit screens the macula and retina.

Glaucoma

What is glaucoma, and how we test for it

Eye pressure check

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often associated with elevated eye pressure. It is one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss and frequently has no early symptoms.

At Cohenmehr Optometry, we focus on early detection and careful monitoring of glaucoma and glaucoma suspects.

Our glaucoma care includes:

  • Eye pressure measurement and monitoring
  • OCT imaging of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer
  • Visual field testing to detect functional vision loss
  • Retinal photography for baseline and progression tracking

When necessary, we work closely with glaucoma specialists to ensure timely referral and advanced treatment.

Get tested for glaucoma before it causes permanent vision loss. We offer full glaucoma evaluations in Los Angeles using advanced technology: OCT imaging, visual field testing, eye pressure checks (tonometry), pachymetry, and optic nerve exams.

Macular degeneration

Macular degeneration: monitoring dry and wet AMD

Retinal photograph of the macula

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. It can impact reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

We monitor both dry and wet forms of macular degeneration with advanced imaging to identify changes early and guide management.

Our macular degeneration services include:

  • OCT imaging to assess macular structure and fluid
  • Retinal photography to monitor progression
  • Education on lifestyle changes and nutritional supplementation
  • Prompt referral for retinal treatment when indicated

Early diagnosis is critical to preserving vision.

Retinal disease

Retinal disease: diabetic, vascular and inflammatory changes

The retina is a delicate layer of tissue that is vital to vision. Retinal diseases can be related to systemic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or inflammation, as well as aging or genetic factors.

We evaluate and manage a wide range of retinal conditions, including:

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal tears or degeneration
  • Macular edema
  • Inflammatory or vascular retinal disease

Our retinal evaluations include:

  • Dilated retinal examinations
  • High-resolution retinal photography
  • OCT imaging to detect swelling, thinning, or structural changes

When specialized care is required, we coordinate referrals with trusted retinal specialists so your care continues smoothly.

Common questions

Ocular disease, answered.

Anything else, call the office at 310-828-2010.

  • Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss and frequently has no early symptoms, which is why early detection and careful monitoring matter.

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) gives detailed cross-sectional imaging of the retina and optic nerve.

  • Yes. We monitor both dry and wet forms of macular degeneration with advanced imaging, with prompt referral for retinal treatment when indicated.

  • Diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears or degeneration, macular edema, and inflammatory or vascular retinal disease.

  • Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, the cable that carries images from the eye to the brain, most often because the pressure inside the eye is higher than that nerve can tolerate. It usually has no early symptoms, takes side vision first, and the loss is permanent, so it is found by testing, not by noticing.

  • Most often, fluid drains too slowly from the eye, pressure builds, and over years that pressure damages the optic nerve; some people develop the same nerve damage at pressures that would be normal for someone else. Risk is higher over age 60 (especially for Hispanic/Latino patients), for African American adults over 40, and for anyone with a family history of glaucoma.

  • No. There is no cure, and treatment cannot undo damage already done, but early treatment, with eye drops, laser or surgery, can often stop the damage and protect the vision you still have. Routine exams find it by testing, long before symptoms would.

  • It runs in families. A family history of glaucoma puts you in the higher-risk group, where a comprehensive dilated eye exam every one to two years is recommended. Tell us at your visit, and we will set the interval for pressure checks, OCT and visual fields accordingly.
