Refractive Lens Exchange

The cataract operation, scheduled on your terms instead of the cataract’s.

RLE replaces the eye’s natural lens with an advanced implant — the same operation cataract patients get, chosen earlier to solve presbyopia and big prescriptions at once. Choosing the implant style wisely is most of the game; that counseling happens here.

The arc

Counsel, operate, calibrate.

  1. 01

    Implant counseling

Distance-only, extended-depth or multifocal styles each trade differently between crispness, range and night halos. Our eye doctors in Los Angeles translate the options against how you actually live.

  2. 02

    Measurements

Surface and tear-film prep comes first, because implant calculations are only as good as the surface they are measured through.

  3. 03

Surgery, one eye at a time

Performed by the surgeon, usually days to weeks apart; we run the between-eye checks.

  4. 04

    Neuro-adaptation

Advanced implants take the brain weeks to learn. We track the adjustment, treat dryness that blurs the result, and finish with any fine-tuning prescription.

Common questions

Lens exchange, answered.

Anything else, call the office at 310-828-2010.

  • Same procedure, different timing: RLE is elected before the lens clouds, trading a future cataract for clear-lens optics now.

  • Many patients are for most tasks with the right implant choice; honest counseling beforehand is exactly why co-management matters.

  • Implant styles differ here — it is a core part of the counseling conversation, and dryness treatment reduces the glare that isn’t the implant’s fault.

  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE), also called clear lens extraction, removes the eye's natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens implant. It is similar to cataract surgery, but it is done before a cataract is present, to correct vision; it is one option for people who are highly nearsighted or whose corneas are too thin for laser procedures. An implant placed in front of the natural lens (a phakic implant) is the alternative that keeps it. Choosing the implant style (distance-only, extended-depth or multifocal) is most of the decision, and that counseling happens here.

  • Yes. RLE removes your natural lens for good and replaces it with an implant. A cataract is a cloudy area in the natural lens, so the lens that would have clouded is gone. As after cataract surgery, though, some people later develop a secondary cataract, also called posterior capsule opacification: scar tissue that makes vision cloudy again. It is common, affecting up to 2 in 5 people after cataract surgery, and a quick, painless laser treatment called YAG laser capsulotomy clears it.
