Common questions, answered plainly.

38 questions patients ask, grouped so you can find yours.

Where an answer depends on your eyes, our optometrists in Los Angeles say so — your exam is where you get the specific answer. When in doubt: 310-828-2010.

An exam room or the front desk

01Getting started

Booking, forms, hours and location.

The front desk
  • Request an appointment online through our booking page, or call the office at 310-828-2010.

  • Yes. You can complete the patient intake form online before your appointment.

  • All three doctors see patients for comprehensive eye exams. Dr. Bijan Cohenmehr leads dry eye care, Dr. Kevin Cohenmehr leads glaucoma and diabetic eye exams, and Dr. Brandon Cohenmehr leads keratoconus and scleral lens care.

  • Monday 10am to 5pm, and Tuesday through Friday 8am to 5pm. The office is closed Saturday and Sunday.

  • Cohenmehr Optometry is at 12222 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025 — on Wilshire between Bundy and Centinela, right on the Santa Monica border.

02Insurance & benefits

Vision, medical, FSA and HSA.

Paying with a credit card at the front desk
  • We can often use medical insurance in lieu of vision insurance for exams if you did not pay for vision benefits.

  • Common vision plans including VSP and EyeMed, among others. If yours is not on our list, call 310-828-2010 to verify.

  • Yes — exams, prescription eyewear, contact lenses and medically necessary specialty lenses are typically eligible expenses. We provide itemized receipts; confirm specifics with your plan administrator.

  • Yes — for specialty lenses and dry eye procedures we verify coverage first, so costs are known before you decide.

03Pricing & programs

Ortho-K, scleral lenses, OptiLIFT, IPL.

  • Special pricing: $1,500 total — custom lenses for both eyes and your follow-up visits included. Call 310-828-2010 to confirm current availability.

  • Plans often cover part or all of medically necessary scleral lenses. We document necessity and check your benefits before you commit.

  • A typical course is four sessions, about one week apart — each visit is quick, painless, and has no downtime.

  • Yes — IPL works as a series, guided by your meibomian gland imaging, with maintenance as needed.

04Urgent care

Same-day eye emergencies.

A slit lamp exam
  • Yes. Urgent eye care is always welcome at Cohenmehr Optometry, with same-day appointments available.

  • We diagnose and treat common eye emergencies including eye pain, styes, red eye, light sensitivity, flashes of light, and sudden vision changes.

  • Call 911 for sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, even if it comes back; sudden double vision; double vision or a droopy eyelid that comes with a pupil that looks different, eye pain or a severe headache; or any change in vision with face drooping, arm weakness or trouble speaking. These can be signs of a stroke or another brain or nerve emergency. For a chemical splash, rinse the eye with clean water for 15 to 20 minutes first, then call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 and us or an emergency room. If something has cut or pierced the eye, go to an emergency room: don't rinse it or remove anything, and protect the eye without pressing on it. For something stuck in your eye, don't rub it: call 310-828-2010 and come straight in, because we remove these in the office, or go to an emergency room when we're closed. Call us immediately for a same-day exam, or go to an emergency room when we're closed, for a curtain or shadow over your vision, new flashes or a shower of new floaters; severe eye pain with headache, nausea or halos; a blow to the eye that leaves pain or changed vision; or, if you wear contact lenses, pain, redness, blurred vision, light sensitivity or a white spot on the cornea (take the lens out first).

  • Call 310-828-2010: during office hours we'll fit you in the same day. When we're closed, call 911 for sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes (even if it comes back), sudden double vision or any sign of a stroke. Go to an emergency room for a chemical splash (rinse for 15 to 20 minutes first and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222), an eye that is cut or has something stuck in it, a curtain or shadow over your vision, new flashes or a shower of new floaters, severe eye pain, a blow to the eye that leaves pain or changed vision, or a painful red eye in a contact lens wearer. For everything else, call us first thing in the morning.

05Dry eye

The program, from imaging to OptiLIFT.

Dry eye treatment
  • Treatment is custom tailored from meibomian gland imaging: IPL, OptiLIFT, dissolvable punctal plugs, amniotic membranes, prescription therapy and scleral lenses — including options covered by medical insurance.

  • OptiLIFT® by Lumenis pairs dynamic muscle stimulation with radiofrequency to tighten the periocular muscles, restore lid closure and the blink, and improve gland function — with a visible cosmetic lift around the eyes.

  • That is exactly what the dry eye program is for: imaging finds the cause — glands, lids, inflammation or drainage — and treatment targets it instead of coating it.

  • Dr. Bijan Cohenmehr leads dry eye care; scleral lens options are personally overseen by Dr. Brandon Cohenmehr.

06Keratoconus & scleral lenses

Free-form fittings on the Eaglet ESP.

A scleral lens
  • A lens that is larger than a standard contact lens and rests on the white of the eye (the sclera), vaulting the cornea on a reservoir of saline.

  • We fit free-form scleral lenses exclusively, designed from an Eaglet Eye Surface Profiler map — hundreds of thousands of elevation points across the sclera. Very few California offices carry this technology.

  • Yes — patients fly in from across California and beyond. We cluster mapping, fitting and training into travel-friendly visits.

  • Keratoconus and corneal disease, severe dry eye, and exposure from Bell’s palsy and facial palsies, among others.

  • Baseline maps, a hard stop on eye rubbing, and short-interval monitoring — documented progression starts the cross-linking conversation early, when it helps most.

07Children & myopia

The myopia program and vision therapy.

A pediatric eye exam
  • Slowing how fast nearsightedness worsens while children grow — because lifetime eye risk tracks the prescription. Ortho-K leads our program, alongside atropine, Stellest lenses and multifocal contacts.

  • The one your child will actually live with: Ortho-K for lens-free days, atropine for the simplest nights, Stellest for glasses wearers, multifocals for daytime contacts. Measurements and personality decide.

  • Yes — outdoor time is linked to slower myopia onset, and marathon near work pushes the other way. Habits support treatment; they don’t replace it.

  • Yes. Dr. Kevin Cohenmehr focuses on vision therapy, including work with children who have developmental delays, learning disabilities, or other special needs.

08Surgery co-management

Before and after every procedure.

  • Your surgeon operates; we do everything around it — candidacy work-up and corneal maps before, healing checks after, records shared both ways, minutes from home.

  • LASIK, PRK, SMILE, EVO ICL, refractive lens exchange, cataract surgery, corneal cross-linking, ring segments, corneal transplants and pterygium surgery.

  • That is the arrangement — co-managed aftercare runs here on Wilshire, with the surgeon looped in at every milestone.

09Glasses & contacts

The optical boutique.

The frame wall
  • Yes — a full-service optical boutique with eyeglasses and sunglasses: Gucci, Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Chopard, Bottega Veneta and more, fitted by our opticians.

  • All types — standard soft, multifocal, toric, daily and monthly, plus specialty lenses for astigmatism, keratoconus and Ortho-K.

  • Typically yes — prescription eyewear is a standard eligible expense, which is why December is the optical’s busiest month.

10Finding things

Symptom finder and the Site Index.

  • The symptom finder: sixteen complaints in plain words, each matched to the right pages and the right urgency.

  • Yes — the Site Index maps every page, grouped: services, dry eye, keratoconus, myopia, co-management, the conditions library, articles and locations.
